What is Veneralia? The Ancient Roman Festival of Venus
Veneralia was an ancient Roman festival dedicated to Venus Verticordia, an aspect of the goddess Venus associated with moral clarity, emotional purification, and the restoration of love in its rightful place. The festival took place each year on April 1st and was observed primarily by women who sought Venus’ assistance in matters of the heart, relationships, and personal virtue.
In Roman religion, Venus was not only the goddess of love and beauty. She was also connected to attraction, fertility, prosperity, pleasure, and the subtle forces that draw people together. Venus Verticordia in particular was invoked when someone wanted to correct the course of their desires, relationships, or emotional life.
The name Verticordia roughly translates to “she who turns hearts.” The Romans believed this form of Venus had the power to redirect misguided affection, restore loyalty, and bring the heart back into alignment.
Because of this, Veneralia was not simply a celebration of romance. It was a day of spiritual and emotional cleansing.
How Veneralia Was Celebrated in Ancient Rome
Historical sources such as Ovid’s Fasti describe several ritual customs associated with the festival. While the practices varied over time, a few core traditions appear repeatedly.
One of the central rituals involved the ceremonial washing of the statue of Venus. The statue of Venus Verticordia would be removed from her temple and taken to the baths where it was ritually cleansed with water and adorned with flowers, myrtle, and fresh garments. This act symbolized renewal and purification.
Women who attended the festival would also participate in their own form of ritual washing. Bathing held spiritual significance in Roman culture, and during Veneralia it served as a symbolic cleansing of emotional burdens, regrets, and relational discord.
Offerings were then given to Venus. These often included flowers, incense, perfumes, and small devotional gifts. Myrtle, a plant sacred to Venus, was especially common in these offerings.
Prayers and petitions followed. Devotees asked Venus for assistance in love, attraction, reconciliation, and the restoration of harmony within their lives.
It was a day focused on realignment rather than indulgence. Participants reflected on their relationships, their desires, and their conduct in matters of love.

Is Veneralia Celebrated Today?
Veneralia is not widely observed in mainstream culture today, but it has been revived within several modern spiritual traditions. Practitioners of contemporary paganism, devotional polytheism, and Venus-centered spirituality often incorporate the festival into their yearly practice. As someone who works within the Venusian current, I also mark this day in my own practice.
Modern celebrations tend to adapt the ancient customs into personal ritual.
Common ways people observe Veneralia today include:

Setting intentions related to love, self-worth, and attraction
Creating a small Venus altar with flowers, candles, and incense
Offering perfumes, oils, or sweets as devotional gifts

This practice can also be connected to personal magnetism and self-value. In this context, Veneralia becomes a day to examine how one relates to pleasure, beauty, intimacy, and worth.
Another approach is as a devotional day dedicated to Venus herself, offering prayers and acts of reverence.
Regardless of the form it takes, the spirit of the festival remains the same: cleansing the emotional field and consciously inviting Venusian harmony back into one's life.
