Practical Magick and Astrology
Astrology has always been an important part of my magickal practice.
But for me, astrology isn't just about reading a daily horoscope. I use astrology as a way of understanding the energetic weather around me. Just like I might check the weather before deciding what to wear or whether I want to spend the day outside, I look at the planets to understand what kind of current I'm working with. Then I decide what to do with it.
That is where astrology and practical magick meet.
Astrology Gives Me the Timing
One of the things I love about astrology is that it gives me timing. There are times when the planetary current supports beginning something. There are times that are better for reviewing, releasing, protecting, resting, communicating, creating, or going inward. I even take a look at the astro weather when I want to go out dancing, ha.
I see the planets as describing the conditions I'm working within.
If Mars is particularly active, I might choose to work with courage, motivation, boundaries, action, or protection.
If Venus is prominent, I might focus on love, beauty, pleasure, relationships, self-worth, creativity, or abundance.
If Mercury is active, I might work with communication, learning, divination, writing, travel, or mental clarity.
Astrology gives me the current and my magick is what I choose to do with it.
I Don't Need a Complicated Ritual
This is where my practical approach comes in. If I see an astrological alignment that I want to work with, I don't automatically feel the need to create a two-hour ceremony. Sometimes I will, when the planetary work calls for something more formal. But other times, I might simply light a candle associated with the planet, choose an appropriate herb or incense, say an incantation, write an intention, pull some tarot cards, or spend a few minutes meditating on the energy.
The practice doesn't have to be complicated to be intentional. For example, if I'm working with Venus, I might wear something that makes me feel beautiful. I might use rose, vanilla, jasmine, or another Venusian botanical. I might put on music, light a candle, take a bath, tend to my appearance, or spend time creating something beautiful. That can be Venusian magick.
I don't have to stand in a circle surrounded by twenty-seven magickal tools to work with Venus. Sometimes Venus is simply how I choose to move through my day.
I Work With the Planet, Not Against It
This is one of the biggest lessons astrology has taught me. I don't want to constantly fight the current. If Mercury is retrograde, for example, I don't automatically see that as a period when everything is doomed. I look at what Mercury is asking me to pay attention to. Review, reconsider, reorganize, revisit old ideas, look at communication, check the details, you get the picture.
Instead of worrying about Mercury retrograde, I can use the period intentionally. My astrology becomes useful because it gives me a reason to take practical action.
The Moon Is One of My Everyday Tools
The Moon is probably one of the easiest ways to bring astrology into everyday magick.
I don't need an elaborate ritual to work with the lunar cycle. The New Moon can be a time for planting seeds and setting intentions. As the Moon grows, I can work on building, attracting, strengthening, and increasing. The Full Moon can be a time of illumination, completion, charging, and seeing things clearly. As the Moon wanes, I can focus on releasing, clearing, banishing, simplifying, and letting go. The short moments of the Dark Moon can be a time for stillness, shadow work, divination, ancestor work, or simply resting.
The Moon gives me a rhythm that makes a magickal practice easier to maintain.
I Also Know When to Leave the Astrology Alone
This is important.
Astrology is a tool, it isn't supposed to become another source of fear. I don't want to wake up every morning and spend an hour worrying about what every planet is doing. Sometimes I simply live my life.
But also sometimes the best magickal practice is not checking another transit and not trying to find meaning behind every little thing that happens. Practical magick should make my life more intentional, not make me afraid to live it.
I use astrology when it is useful to me. I don't allow it to replace common sense, personal responsibility, or my own judgment.
Truthfully, I find that when I am in alignment with myself, I naturally seem to know how to navigate the energies around me. I don't have to constantly analyze every transit or search for a cosmic explanation for everything that happens. I can simply trust myself to move with the current, making choices that feel right for me while staying aware of the astrological influences at play.
